GURHAN TRUNK SHOW NOVEMBER 6 -7, 2009

GURHAN

Born and raised in Turkey, Gurhan studied mathematics and business at the University of Ankara and pursued a variety of careers before finding his true vocation as a jewelry designer and goldsmith. It was through his introduction to the unique qualities of pure 24k gold that Gurhan ultimately discovered his creative muse. Gurhan established his first workshop in 1994 in the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul. Inspired by the elemental beauty of pure gold, he chose to forgo formal training and instead recreate for himself the original techniques of the ancient Anatolian and Byzantine metalsmiths. By deconstructing early examples of pure gold jewelry, he learned how they achieved both the strength and lightness necessary to turn 24k gold into jewelry. Eschewing modern technology, he utilized only the primitive tools and methods of antiquity, such as wood, bone and beach sand for buffing and polishing the metal.

Based in New York City and Istanbul, Gurhan's jewelry has remained true to its origins: simple, classic lines, the warm, rich hue and voluptuous texture of pure metal and integrity of design and craftsmanship are the hallmarks of his 24k gold collection. All pieces are fabricated by hand within his own studio, either by Gurhan himself or apprentices who, with no previous training in metalsmithing or jewelry, learn the ancient craft in the same manner he did, untainted by modern methods or preconceptions.

Gurhan Orhan is renowned for his sensual and exotic designs in pure 24 karat yellow gold and precious gems. Gurhan Jewelry beautifully mixes ancient exoticism with modern sensibilities and fashion.
Gurhan is committed to designing and creating jewelry that is comfortable to wear, sensual to touch, and timeless.
He says:
"I seek to evoke the past in the context of the present. When I create my jewelry, I enter the mind of the ancient goldsmiths, reincarnating the mystery of their techniques and their spirit, and reinterpreting it with the inspiration of today's refined elegance."
Gurhan Jewelry is lovingly handmade and truly original. His use of pure 24 karat yellow gold creates warmth and deep sensuality, communicating an exotic energy to the woman wearing his earrings, rings, necklaces, or bracelets. Gurhan Jewelry reminds us just how wonderful pure yellow gold jewelry looks and feels.

PAUL MORELLI TRUNK SHOW OCTOBER 9 - 10, 2009

PAUL MORELLI

Paul Morelli has built his business designing jewelry that speaks to a sophisticated audience with the utmost in creativity, innovation and meticulous attention to detail. Morelli works exclusively in 18-karat yellow gold and platinum. Sourcing only the finest materials, he crafts raw materials into fresh shapes and forms resulting in timeless works of art to be treasured for a lifetime.
Paul Morelli has built his 25+ year career as one of America’s preeminent jewelry designers upon seasonal collections marked by a profound attention to detail. Whether it’s the pristine architectural lines of his Diamonds on a Wire collection or the stylized botanical details in his nature-inspired pieces, his restless creativity, desire for innovation and careful attention to detail are the common threads that weave throughout his 25-year in jewelry design.

Paul works exclusively in 18-karat gold and platinum, favoring mostly diamonds and pearls, crafting these raw materials into fresh shapes and forms with every new collection. While many designers have an instantly recognizable style, jewelry from the Paul Morelli studio is distinguished by its fine workmanship and technique rather than by a signature motif. The styles are fluid, but the artistry remains constant: as Paul explains it, “I design jewelry in the same way that fashion designers design clothes, creating fresh perspectives every season.”

The comparison with clothing design is no accident. Paul, a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, has been immersed in the design world since childhood, when he worked as an apprentice to his father, an opera and theater costume designer based in Philadelphia. His love of fashion and art, his precise, perfectionist nature and his preference for working with his hands led Paul on a different, parallel path: the exacting and challenging avenue of jewelry design.

He established his studio in 1982 in his father’s former costume atelier, which he transformed into a workshop and showroom with a clean, contemporary aesthetic that provides and elegant backdrop to the intricately wrought pieces. It is in this lofty, light-filled space that the jewelry is conceived, designed and made by hand, in the tradition of the European masters.

BARBARA HEINRICH HYDRANGEA EARRING VIDEO

BARBARA HEINRICH

My motivation to create jewelry is like an inborn momentum, which I do not take credit for, for it has been with me as long as I can remember. Specific inspirations are often the starting point for a new body of work; they set off the creative process, which is so crucial for any artist. In order to allow the creative process to unfold, I keep an empty space in myself at all times, undisturbed by distractions or business and uncluttered by preconceived images or aesthetic judgments. This empty space is sometimes scary to enter because nothing exists in there, not even my own skills and accomplishments. In this empty space, the creative power takes over and my inner eye conceives new pieces or ideas before they are given birth by my goldsmith skills at the workbench. Anything can serve as inspiration for me: remembering a fairy tale from my childhood, looking back at a painting, studying natural forms, or simply daydreaming. It takes the right time and circumstances for the inspiration to set off the creative process and serve as the initial impulse for a new piece of jewelry. I prepare myself by keeping a sketchbook at hand, my way of catching the ideas and images before they flee back into the realm of the invisible and uncreated.
